Making a Living at Art?

Sep 24, 2020 | Stories

Why in the world would one want to do this? I have been asked this as well as have been told many times, “Oh I dont want to sell my art I give it away.” The implication is art is above trade, buying and selling those plebian activities of human commerce and may I say, making a living.

When life threw some curve balls after – at a mature age-I had fallen in passion for pictoral story telling, choices for this meagerly endowed intellect were scarce. A friend saw my attempts at visual depiction and promptly bought  3 paintings. ( We have always supported each other financially in creative ways when either one of us were in desperate straights.) But she assured me she really wanted the paintings and that I should find a venue and do a show.

I knew I was not particularly good at drawing and painting, but it was my passion which drove me to work every day, hours a day that made my skills passable. If I went to a job to pay the bills, I would not have that time to sharpen and hone and so with undying support from my friend and my husband, I launched a career trajectory. No not a career– an advocation, a calling a part of my spiritual journey wedded with a livelihood with which I am at complete peace.
