Yellow- Butterfly Kisses on Paper

May 26, 2020 | Watercolor

Yellow is hard. It is hard to get it to sing. Yellow can go so, so flat. I wonder why that is.. I know how it happens but what is the science behind yellow going flat?

I know if –

— to make the yellow ‘stronger’ I have added layers of pigment, it goes flatter and flatter with each layer as it dries. ( It can look very good when wet.)

—  painted on in a single brush stroke it is flatter than if the paper is damp and the pigment is gently dipped into the moisture verses the brush going all the way down to the paper.

— surrounding color is not the right value and hue the yellow goes flat

–not enough white is left the yellow goes flat.

So adding yellow is a tender process.. like butterfly kisses on the paper.
